Notably, the number of autonomous vehicles-related patent applications in the automotive industry was 1,058 in Q4 2023, versus 1,670 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 26% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that General Motors filed the most autonomous vehicles patents within the automotive industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 70 autonomous vehicles-related patents in the quarter, compared with 89 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Toyota Motor with 64 autonomous vehicles patent filings, Aptiv (49 filings), and TuSimple (48 filings) in Q4 2023.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 65% share of total patent filings
The largest share of autonomous vehicles related patent filings in the automotive industry in Q4 2023 was in the US with 65%, followed by China (6%) and the UK (2%). The share represented by the US was 29% higher than the 36% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
