The top five companies accounted for 32% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Honda Motor filed the most 3D printing patents within the automotive industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 44 3D printing-related patents in the quarter, compared with 2 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Ford Motor with 21 3D printing patent filings, General Motors (16 filings), and Xerox (14 filings) in Q4 2023.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 35% share of total patent filings
The largest share of 3D printing related patent filings in the automotive industry in Q4 2023 was in the US with 35%, followed by China (20%) and Japan (11%). The share represented by the US was 4% higher than the 31% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
