Notably, the number of cybersecurity-related patent applications in the automotive industry was 2,805 in Q4 2023, versus 3,384 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 14% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Huawei Investment filed the most cybersecurity patents within the automotive industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 129 cybersecurity-related patents in the quarter, compared with 154 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Samsung Group with 73 cybersecurity patent filings, Robert Bosch Stiftung (69 filings), and Qualcomm (66 filings) in Q4 2023.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 32% share of total patent filings
The largest share of cybersecurity related patent filings in the automotive industry in Q4 2023 was in the US with 32%, followed by China (31%) and Japan (5%). The share represented by the US was 3% higher than the 29% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
