Notably, the number of patent applications in the automotive industry was 107,940 in Q4 2023, versus 121,133 in the prior quarter. Filings were down 12% year-on-year and decrease 10% quarter-on-quarter. This compares to a 12% year-on-year decrease in patent grants and 10% decline in quarter-on-quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 10% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that the largest number of patents filed over the last quarter was by Toyota Motor with 3,152, followed by Robert Bosch Stiftung with 2,311 and Honda Motor with 1,797.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 39% share of total patent filings
The largest share of patent filings in the automotive industry in Q4 2023 was in China with 39%, followed by the US (17%) and Japan (9%). The share represented by China was 7% lower than the 46% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
