Taiwan’s ProLogium Technology held an opening ceremony this week for a new NTD4.2bn (US$134m) factory in Taoyuan dedicated to solid state batteries for electric vehicles.
ProLogium said the plant would be able to supply two gigawatt-hours (GWh) of ceramic solid state batteries per year when it reaches full capacity, enough for some 26,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The company said it expects the first BEVs fitted with these batteries to go on sale later this year.
The company said the new facility would serve as a pilot plant before more ambitious global expansion plans are in place, including a EUR5.2bn 48Gwh facility near Dunkirk, France, scheduled to be operating in 2027.
The director of the French Office in Taipei, Franck Paris, and a French delegation from Dunkirk along with Taoyuan city mayor Shan-Zheng Zhang, attended the Taoyuan plant’s opening ceremony where the company unveiled its 106Ah solid-state battery with high silicon anode designed purposely for BEVs.
ProLogium CEO Vincent Yang said: “This is the world’s first solid state lithium battery mass production line, mainly targeting electric cars. EV manufacturers are our future [customers]”. The company said it aimed to become the world’s biggest manufacturer of solid state batteries by 2030-2032 when its French factory is expected to reach full capacity.
Mercedes-Benz is one of ProLogium’s strategic shareholders with the two currently working together to develop cheaper and safer batteries for future BEVs. Vietnam’s VinFast also holds a stake in ProLogium, as does South Korea’s POSCO Group, Germany’s FEV Group and US-based Arkim.
